Daisy and the Mechanical Boy – Style rules
Thoughts: I think that it would be good to lean into the appeal of traditional materials for the look of the show. The backgrounds made so far are strong in part because of the medium they were originally conceived in. Through my research I also looked at victorian illustrations, specifically stuff catered to children and I think that that style of drawing could look intriguing animated. (We should see what we can do in some proper tests)
A good example of what I’m talking about in practice is how they animated ‘The Boy, the Horse, the fox and the mole’ by Charlie Mackesy.
His illustration work was adapted beautifully into animation by using 3D models. Keeping the budget down by using 3D to achieve this aesthetic in the character animation could be an option. https://youtu.be/609A7IGdoEc?si=Go_4Z3xeeCc8wR2e
Actual Rule list:
Humans and other organic beings = Rounder shape language, organic shapes should be used to accentuate how even though Daisy’s father is big and strong, he is still human and more physically fragile compared to Spring Heeled Jack for example.
Tom and other automaton = Leaning more towards angular shapes in their details. I understand that Tom (and other automaton) were designed to look as human as possible so**
** Humans will have a different eye design, following the rule that generally there will be a lot more highlights in the eyes themselves compared to anything inorganic.
** Tom and others like him will have a white circle in the middle of the eye where the pupil should be. No other highlights, the colour of the circle is white for two reasons:
1) Helps the automatons look more friendly and life like without sacrificing the choice to make highlights in the eyes exclusively a living being trait
2) It’s the opposite colour of what a pupil is usually
DATMB Research Presentation
During Week 1, I also did some research into target demographic, format and run time too. I also recommended some media for the writers to take a look at for more inspiration. (see below)
